Description
Iria Otero came to the world of wine without family tradition or winery but that did not stop her and today her Vinos con Memoria are already known outside our borders. It is committed to a viticulture attached to the past and tradition to achieve wines of varieties with character, worked by hand and with hardly any modifications. This viticulturist settled in the heart of Ribeiro for a little over a year and a half, began to approach the world of wine almost 20 years ago. After studying Pharmacy, she decided to bet on oenology and in 2004 she graduated as an oenologist in La Rioja, since then she has not separated from the sector. Iria was first working in wineries in La Rioja, to later return to Galicia to complete the doctoral thesis and start working in Galician wineries. It was in 2015 when he took the step of starting a personal project: Wines with Memory. “These are wines in which we try to go back a bit to the past, to the most traditional way of making the wines of each area,” he says. One of the maxims that prevails both in the vineyards and in the winery is to seek processes that alter the production of the grapes and also the wines as little as possible. Thus, they collect grapes from old plots, which were becoming disused as they could not be mechanized. In the vineyard they work everything by hand, without herbicides and opting for a traditional viticulture that for them is the one that gives the best grape quality, although it is more expensive and laborious. The same thing happens in the winery, Iria points out that he seeks to produce wines without much intervention, where long aging periods prevail that help to achieve good results without resorting to additives. Vinos con Memoria brings together three differentiated projects in the same work philosophy, since it has harvests from three different grape production areas. In the Rías Baixas, with 3 plots that work in a sustainable way, almost without intervention and with small yields, it processes about 9,000 kilos of Albariño grapes with which it makes, in a rented cellar in Ribadumia, about 5,000 bottles of its Sacabeira wine. Its wines are aimed at a specialized public that focuses on restaurants and gourmet shops. Almost half of its production is destined for export and the US is one of the main destinations. Other international destinations for these wines are countries such as Australia, Germany or Denmark. Alebub Branco is a fantastic white wine with aging made by Bodega Vinos con Memoria – Iria Otero with the Godello, Loureiro and Treixadura grape varieties within the protection of the regulatory board of Ribeiro Designation of Origin. In the Iria Otero vineyard, everything is worked by hand, without herbicides and opting for a traditional viticulture since in his opinion it is the one that gives the best grape quality, although it is more expensive and laborious. Similarly in the winery, Iria Otero seeks to produce wines without much intervention, where long aging periods prevail, helping to achieve good results without resorting to additives. Alebub Branco has an annual production of approximately 532 bottles.
