Description
Founded in 2004, Grupo Jorge Ordóñez is a select group of six wineries that make wines from grapes from seven different designations of origin throughout Spain. All the wineries are owned and managed by Jorge Ordóñez. The philosophy of this project is the production of artisan wines from the oldest vineyards of native Spanish grapes. All the vineyards are cared for following the most traditional viticulture methods. The Group’s wines constitute the definitive representation of quality wine made from the oldest clones of the different native Spanish varieties. Bodegas Avancia is located on the slate slopes of Valdeorras, rising above the Sil River. Receiving the name of the mining activity that the Romans carried out in the area (Val-de-Oras could be translated from Latin as Valle del Oro), Valdeorras has an exceptional terroir suitable for the cultivation of two of the most important native Spanish varieties – Godello and Mencía. Jorge was the first intermediary of Godello that introduced it into the United States, and for many years he was the only distributor offering a wine made from this unique variety. Jorge always dreamed of having his own project with Godello, and Bodegas Avancia is the result of this dream. Bodegas Avancia makes the best Godello in all of Spain. In 2016, Robert Parker Jr. declared: “One of my favorite wineries in Spain is Bodegas Avancia. This is a small property of just over 9 Ha, dry land (characteristic of all Jorge Ordóñez varieties), with organic viticulture. His specialty is working with the Godello grape, which could be the best native Spanish white grape. It has the texture of a Chardonnay, but with mineral, fresh and floral notes in its aromatics. Avancia is undoubtedly the main producer of this interesting and delicious dry white wine. ” Jorge also selected the Valdeorras D.O. for its extraordinary conditions for growing the Mencía variety, the most important Galician red grape. The combination of slate soils, considerable altitude, old vines and a warmer climate, compared to the rest of Galicia, give Valdeorras the best terroir to cultivate Mencía. Avancia Nobleza Mencia is an extraordinary red wine with aging made by the Jorge Ordoñez Group – Bodegas Avancia within the Valdeorras Designation of Origin with the Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Mouratón (Juan García), Gran Negro, Sousón and Cariñena grape varieties. From the Aeiroá (Raxoá) vineyard divided into three plots on the banks of the Sil River and with a slope of 30º. Maceration and fermentation took place in four old demi-muid barrels. Three of them with traditionally destemmed grapes and the fourth underwent a semicarbonic maceration with the whole bunches. Maceration at 6ºC for 48 hours before fermentation. Spontaneous fermentation without temperature control. Completion of malolcatic fermentation in barrels after pressing in a vertical press. Avancia Nobleza Mencia is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels.
