Description
The centenary family winery Viña Cazoga is today managed by the fourth generation of the same family. The construction of the building in which it is located, dating from the 18th century, has been renovated and restored and its total capacity is 26,000 liters. The winery produces an average of 10,000 liters per year. The winery has 5 hectares of vineyards in which it cultivates the Mencía and Godello varieties. Jorge Carnero, owner of the winery that bears his name and producer of renowned wines such as Viña Cazoga or Don Diego, continues the legacy already built by his father, who was in love with Amandi wines and who in his day decided to bring together the his grandfather’s vineyards and dedicating himself body and soul to his passion through the recovery of centuries-old vines. We are talking about the late 70s, which says a lot about his visionary spirit. Today, Jorge continues that romantic vision of a profession, that of a winegrower, which in certain areas of the Ribeira Sacra is still a thing of heroes. Jorge’s great-grandfather was once the biggest harvester in Amandi, he had many hectares, and in fact his father wanted to resume the family’s wine-growing tradition and bought the vineyard from his cousins and uncles to reunite the family vineyard. It was the 70s and he was stationed in Guinea, but the distance was not an obstacle to fulfill his dream. Hence the origin in modern times of the current winery, thanks to his father and his work of bringing together the nucleus of the great-grandfather’s vineyard. In fact, his father was one of those who advocated in his day for an Amandi Denomination of Origin to be made. Those were times when there were neither tracks nor catamaran and the effort to harvest and take care of the vineyard was truly heroic. Perhaps that is why at that time they called it «O tolo de Cazoga». Don Diego is a spectacular red wine with aging made with the Mencía, Tempranillo and Garnacha grape varieties by Viña Cazoga Winery within the protection of the regulatory board of Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin. This is a wine made from centenary vines of Mencia mainly located in the lower part of the Amandi ribeira, which provides a great maturity and alcoholic richness to the wine. Don Diego is a wine with volume, tasty, with a very well integrated acidity, with ripe tannins and a good structure. Long and persistent.
