Description
At Manuel Moldes’ house, they had always made wine for his own consumption but in 2009 Chicho, which is what everyone calls him, decided to take his passion and hobby a little further and launched Fulcro Wineries, a garage project (literally) focused on making fresh terroir wines from the Salnés valley. It maintains a low profile and barely makes 30,000 bottles, preferring to grow in an orderly fashion and only make wines that it likes, but it is without a doubt one of the names to be reckoned with in the area. Helped in the beginning by Rodrigo Méndez (Forjas del Salnés), Moldes has two reds and three Albariños on the market in its small vineyards near the sea in the surroundings of Meaño and Sanxenxo; A Pedreira, Fulcro and Con Pescuda are their white wines and A Pescuda and Aliaxe Furtivo are their reds, although Aliaxe Fabaiños is already their new red wine project. Together with his friends Rodrigo Méndez and Raúl Pérez, Moldes is working on a collection of three Albariños that will see the light of day in the near future. All three come from a very special vineyard in Arras, an area in the upper part of Portonovo with clay soils protected by a two-meter layer of sand and old vines. Another vineyard that he has started to take over in recent years is an Albariño plot with clay soils, mica and some degraded granite in Góndar, a few kilometers from the winery. Although the wine from the 2017 vintage was “spectacular”, according to Moldes, as there was little, it was mixed in A Pescuda, but in the future it will come out as A Cesteira. The 2019 vintage, still in the cellar and aging in stainless steel and used wood, is enveloping and with great volume and always present acidity. There will be about 800 bottles, but it has a growth margin of up to 4,000 bottles. Finca A Pedreira is made from vineyards near the sea planted on granitic sandy soils from Finca A Predeira in the town of Sanxenxo (Pontevedra). Finca A Pedreira ferments in stainless steel tanks and is left to rest on its own lees for 5 months without carrying out malolactic fermentation.
