Description
Raúl Pérez Bodegas y Viñedos is not a typical winery. Vineyards, brands, types of grapes, types of wine … all of them are changing data depending on the nature and creativity of its creator, the winemaker and winemaker Raúl Pérez. Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s right-hand man in Spain, says of him that «Raúl is a free spirit, he makes and undoes, he goes from here to there, he never stops inventing, scheming, testing, changing and changing again … And so it is! In the winery he works with his own vineyards or with grapes acquired from others. White and red are produced, with autochthonous varieties, with very limited productions depending on the amount of grapes collected. The wines of Raúl Pérez Bodegas y Viñedos are not only produced in El Bierzo, where the winery is located; they are also made in León, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra and Monterrei. The winery, of course, follows the foundations of its creator as traditional work; the little influence on the vineyard, understanding the terrain, each climate, and respecting the maturation times of each variety; the search for long-lasting wines, drinkable from the first moment and at 20 years in the bottle, and the predilection for native and dying grapes. Raúl Pérez takes nature very seriously. His priority is to exert the least influence on the grape. This is how you understand wine. Observing each terrain, each climate and the maturation times of each variety is the basis of his work, a work that affects the ability of the wine to express itself without touching it, without additives that transform it, taking away the role of the wood and letting it each vintage is modified by itself, thus obtaining non-standardized wines. Such a working method endows its wines with an unmistakable stamp. They are linked to Castro Ventosa, the family winery located in Valtuille, their birth town, in the Bierzo region of León. The wines he makes are the wines that excite him, 2003 being a key year: he takes flight with his first personal project, Ultreia, a wine that takes its name from the greeting that the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago used in the past, a path that crosses its town, whose meaning is ‘we go further’. Ultreia is, today, a long list of wine references, not only made in Spain, but also in Portugal together with his friend Dirk Niepport or in South Africa with another friend, Eben Sadie. Restless creator, he decides to bottle under the name La Vizcaína de Vinos, the result of the different terroirs and orientations of Valtuille with the Mencía grape as the protagonist. Also in other areas of Spain and the world, Pérez makes wines in his own way: respecting nature, using, in most cases, the stalk, and producing depending on the amount of grapes that, year after year, produce the selected vines. Alone, in collaboration or advising, he only undertakes exciting projects, creating his own style that has allowed him to have more than 200 labels on The Wine Advocate list, prepared by the prestigious American critic Robert Parker. La del Vivo is a delicious 100% Godello aged white wine made within the protection of the regulatory board of Bierzo Designation of Origin by Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez. This wine is made by César Márquez and Raúl Pérez, and is vinified with the stalk and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels of different capacities. Grouped under the La Vizcaína wine collection are wines from vineyards located around Raúl Pérez’s native town, Valtuille de Abajo. The uniqueness of La Vizcaína is that the wines are produced with grapes from vines with an average of more than fifty years old.
