Description

The vineyards of the Castro de Lobarzán Winery want to be the hallmark of their wines. The winery, located in Villaza (Monterrei), is distinguished by its management in which the search for balance in the vineyard prevails, respecting the land and the environment. “We want to produce personal wines that translate the characteristics of the land in which they are,” they say. Founded in 2000, the small family winery has 5.2 hectares of its own vineyard on slopes with a 7% slope and sandy soils. Although the tradition of growing grapes and making wine goes back several generations, the definitive impulse of what the winery is today came in the early 90s, when José Fernández began to renovate the plantations to professionalize them. He installed the first trellised vineyards and selected varieties, opting mainly for Godello and Treixadura in white grapes and for Mencía and Araúxa (Tempranillo) in reds. One of the most important objectives of this winery is the recovery of native varieties of the area (specifically the town of Villaza), by collecting material from these varieties to graft. All the wines they make are made with homegrown grapes and their work is done manually (pruning, harvesting, etc.). The purpose of the winery is to make totally natural white and red wines, respecting the typicality of the autochthonous varieties.
