Description

The history of Bodegas Triay begins six generations ago, around the year 1840, when the family, which was already making wine, began to substitute various fields of wheat and corn for more vineyard plantations in the municipality of Oímbra (Galicia). During the first decades of the 20th century, the wines they made began to have great success, in part, thanks to Purificación Méndez’s brother (five generations ago), since he was archpriest of the royal family, being Alfonso XIII King of Spain, to whom he was delivering his wines. Between 1925 and 1935, they carried out various vineyard plantations, increasing the number of hectares of vineyard they owned to 25. Already in the 1950s, Isaac García, at just 15 years old, began working in the vineyards and making wine, helping his mother and continuing the family tradition. In 1961 he married Obdulia Domínguez (Lula), also from a wine-growing family in the Monterrei region. Lula, like Isaac, has worked in the vineyards from a very young age. Both continued to work from sunrise to sunset, and day after day in the vineyards, in order to obtain wines of recognizable quality. The way of working was totally manual, with the help of a horse for the toughest jobs. However, Isaac and Obdulia continued to train with viticulture courses to improve production techniques, and began to use the technologies of the time to analyze their wines and improve processes. So far, the winery had 8 wooden barrels of 2,000 and 2,500 liters. It was in 1968, when they carried out a small capacity expansion with an 8,000-liter concrete tank. Later, in 1972, they built two other deposits of the same material. In addition, the winery had 2 cement presses of 10,000 liters each. In them, they carried out the treading of the grapes and, in the case of red wines, also the first fermentation. As in the old presses, in these traditional presses, the wine was bled into a basin, from which the grape must was transferred to the barrels. Isaac and Obdulia continued to make wine in their winery until 2004, when they left the vineyards as an inheritance to their two sons, Purificación García and José García. In 2004, Purificación García and her husband, Antonio Á. Triay, in love with viticulture, decided to continue with the family tradition, and built, just 500 meters from the previous one, a small winery, completely new and equipped with the latest technologies. Bodegas Triay was born with a clear purpose, to produce high quality wines and limited production, continuing the family tradition, applying the good knowledge of more than 100 years of history, but using the most cutting-edge technological developments. The winery has a capacity of 40,000 liters and 7 hectares of vineyards, divided into different plots located on the mountain slopes of O Rosal (Oímbra, Galicia), in the Monterrei Designation of Origin. Currently, the children of Puri and Antonio, Iván Álvarez and Lucía Álvarez, collaborate with them in various tasks in the winery: marketing, designs, management, etc., making this family story continue for a long time.
